3 Creative Ways to Make Home Schooling More Fun This Year
The last two years have been a whirlwind, to say the least. From enduring a global pandemic, to changing the way we interact with one another, it’s no surprise that many of us have significantly changed our lifestyles. Depending on where you live, you may not be able to work in person, or attend school in person. And even if you can, many people out there are choosing to stay home to avoid the spread of COVID-19.
Did you know that there are nearly 5 million home school students in grades K-12 in the United States as of March 2021? According to research, that number has doubled since Spring 2019. Even before COVID-19, home schooling has been on the rise.
If you are home schooling your kiddos this year, consider these creative ideas to make the criteria a little more exciting:
Cooking Lessons
It doesn’t matter if your children are elementary school level, or high school level, you can incorporate fun cooking lessons into your curriculum! While you may tend to focus most of your time on formal subjects like science and math, it’s a good idea to switch things up to keep them interested. Also, cooking is an essential task to learn to maintain a healthy lifestyle. So, why not teach them this valuable lesson at home?
If you want to keep it educational, tie in the meal you’re making to a history lesson or math problem so they can understand how this is used in real life. Some ideas include making ‘Medieval Pottage’ or ‘Shishki Donuts.’ Use measuring cups to teach them math, and explain the traditions behind the recipe through history!
Plan Outdoor Activities
Aside from your standard P.E. routine, you may want to consider getting more creative with physical activity. Planning outdoor activities like setting up obstacle courses, riding bikes, going hiking, and swimming can really expand your child’s skill set. You can even plan a few nature studies that not only teach your children about science, but also help them feel more connected to their environment through the exploration of a local park or landmark.
